“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” 1
This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have. 2

NOBODY
10 “So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring My people the Israelites out of Egypt.” 11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” (Exodus 3:10-11)
Do we feel like “nobody” at times when we are aware of an important job that should be done for the Lord, but start questioning our abilities, our talents, our enthusiasm, our time, our responsibilities–and even our want to?
WHO? ME?
And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.” (Exodus 3:12)
Our questioning and so-called “reasoning” fall short every time, because God always promises to be with us. We are never alone as the “nobody” or the “somebody” or the “anybody” in the task.
So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.
(Isaiah 41:10)
Unfortunately, even when God makes this promise to us, we, like Moses, often still question.
13 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is His name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” 14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’” (Exodus 3:13-14)
And God answers all our “supposes” too. To Moses, He said, “Go, assemble the elders of Israel and say to them, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob—appeared to me and said: I have watched over you and have seen what has been done to you in Egypt.” (Exodus 3:16)
To us, He, also, says, “Go.”
19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 29:19-20)
And He watches over us and is with us
As we go forth to do His work.
